dated June 1947 and running to eight pages of Foolscap, in which Dempsey pushes for a far greater sense of direction and protection of our own interests, he closes by saying, "The machine is awaiting the word, but each day that passes makes the execution of the plan more difficult and more costly. Directly the word is given, a load of uncertainty will be removed and we can set about our business in the knowledge that we are working to a goal decided by ourselves in our own interests. And we will find that many of the obstacles in the way of a satisfactory solution in the Middle East will collapse in front of us."
